FAQ
Why did you write the book Dogsled Dreams?
Dogsledding is becoming more popular as society moves towards eco-friendly recreation. There's a growing buzz in the racing circuit also. At a race, I always had curious people asking me questions about my life with the dogs. It seemed there was a real lack of information out there regarding the mushing lifestyle. I wanted to show how important the bonds are between a musher and their dogs. That it's the nature of that special relationship that makes mushers so devoted to their dogs, so passionate about dogsledding. And I wanted to show that in a fun and readable way.
What writers influenced you?
I always had my nose in a book when I was growing up. My report cards indicate that I was a great student, if only I'd stop hiding those books in my desk. I must've read Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell 20 times. I also enjoyed Gary Paulsen's juvenile book series, Dogsong. And let's not forget, Julie of the Wolves by the great Jean Craighead George. Lately I've been reading true adventures. My favorite book is Cold Nights Fast Trails by Dave Oleson reflections of a modern dog musher.
What is the book about?
12-year-old Rebecca runs her dogs with her dad near Thunder Bay, Ontario. She faces wild animal attacks, freezing blizzards, projective poo misiles – all while striving to become a famous dogsled racer.
What are you working on now?
I'm revising ICE DOGS, a wilderness survival story with sled dogs. I've also just started a young adult novel about a canoe ranger. And I continue to write non-fiction articles for magazines.
